Debate: Did my AI ad copy flop because of the tool or the targeting?

I ran a campaign in Chicago last month using Jasper for product descriptions, and conversion tanked 40% compared to my manual copy from six months ago. Some say it's the AI writing, others blame the audience segments I picked - which side do you land on?

Chicago weather might be the hidden variable here. You ran a December campaign against a June control season, right? Retargeting works totally different when people are snowed in vs. walking to the train. Jasper's fine for product copy if you feed it the right tone guidelines but seasonal context is something human brains catch that AI misses. I'd bet your June copy had summer urgency baked in naturally.

Honestly though ruby_lane might be onto something and I think you're getting kinda screwed by the timing more than anything. I've been running ads with various AI tools for like two years now and the seasonal thing is a real bastard that sneaks up on you. June versus December is a huge swing in Chicago especially with the weather and people's shopping moods. The AI probably just spat out generic product hype while your old copy had that summer "gotta get this before the beach closes" energy that just pulls people in different. But I also gotta say targeting might be the sneaky bigger problem here. If you were hitting the same audiences as before but the AI copy didn't match their vibe, it could be that the tool didn't know how to talk to them the way you did. You gotta feed Jasper really specific stuff about your customer's pain points or it just writes boring robot descriptions that nobody cares about. I've had campaigns where the AI copy flopped hard because I was too lazy with the guidelines and the targeting was fine. So yeah I'd split test the copy with your old manual stuff on one audience and the AI stuff on another before you blame the tool completely. The weather thing is real though I've seen it kill campaigns in January that killed it in November.
