Rant: my email tool sent 6,000 wrong name emails to a client list

Last Tuesday our AI email tool pulled the wrong merge field and sent 6,000 messages that all started with "Hi [FIRST NAME]" to a list I built over 8 months. I caught it after an angry reply from a customer in Phoenix, and the fix was going back to a plain spreadsheet and hand picking every segment before anything goes out. Has this happened to anyone else, and is there a way to preview a full send before it goes live that I am missing?
