My AI upscaler output looked like melted plastic on a 4k monitor

Tried Upscayl last month to fix a blurry concert photo from 2022, and the skin texture came out so smooth it looked airbrushed by a drunk robot. I even ran it twice with different models, same waxy result. Has anyone found a free upscaler that actually keeps film grain and pores intact?

Whoa, hold up, I gotta disagree with you there. Honestly, I’ve used Upscayl on some old band photos from like 2019 and the skin texture stayed pretty rough, not perfect but not plastic either. Tbh, maybe the issue is the source file, if it’s super compressed, no free tool is gonna save those pores no matter what model you run. Ngl, I think people expect magic from these tools and then get mad when it’s just math doing its best with what little detail is already there. Try feeding it a less compressed version or lower the scale to 2x instead of 4x, that usually keeps more grit for me.
