The $30 AI enlarger that ruined my favorite photo

Last Tuesday I ran an old portrait through one of those AI upscaling tools to print it at 16x20. The output looked sharp on screen, but when it hit paper, the skin texture had that plastic sheen and the eyes were just off. I compared it to a print from the original file and the difference was obvious. Has anyone else seen AI enhancement destroy fine details in prints, or is it just my workflow?

Man, that plastic skin look is the worst. It's like the AI invents texture instead of keeping what was actually there. I've seen it kill fabric detail too, makes everything look like soft clay. The screen lie is real, it looks great zoomed out but paper shows every fake pore and blurry edge. Only fix I found is running the original at a lower AI strength and then sharpening the print file manually. Way more work but the eyes actually look like eyes instead of glass marbles.
