Am I the only one who regrets buying the $240 magnetic pick-up tool kit
I got the full rolling magnetic tool kit for $240 about 8 months ago, thinking it would end my days of fishing dropped bolts out of bellies and wheel wells. Turns out the magnet is weak on anything past 10 inches, so it just sticks to the cowling and grabs nothing. The flexible claw attachment is the only part that ever works, and you can buy that alone for $12. But some guys at my shop swear the same kit saved them a 3 hour panel pull, so maybe it is just how I use it. Side one says the money was worth it for the one time it saves you a dropped washer in a tight spot, side two says you are better off with a $15 telescoping magnet and a flashlight. Where do you land, and did any specific magnetic tool actually earn its price for you?
The "grab nothing" part is prob not the kit's fault, any magnet loses pull fast with air gap. If the bolt's sitting on plastic or the magnet is bridging off the cowling, it'll feel dead even when it's fine. Try sliding a thin piece of cardboard or tape over the tip so it can touch the metal, changed everything for me.
