Had a convo with a mechanic from the Pacific fleet and he changed my mind on something.

I always thought dope and fabric work was dead until I talked to a guy who still does it on old Grumman amphibians. He said "metal fatigue kills more birds than fabric rot ever will." Has anyone here actually worked on a fabric covered plane recently?

Man, that mechanic's got a point about metal fatigue being the bigger worry.

It's funny how that applies to so much stuff these days. Everyone's scared of the old tech failing but the new stuff has its own hidden problems that are just as bad.

Gotta push back a little here lol. I mean yeah new tech has bugs but old stuff straight up falls apart when you least expect it. At least with the new stuff you can usually find a firmware update or a patch instead of having to hunt down some random part that hasn't been made in 20 years. Metal fatigue is a real thing but I feel like people just like to romanticize the old way of doing things. Most of the time the new stuff works fine and the problems are way overblown online.
