I used to fight with safety wire for 20 minutes per fastener until I finally switched to the cross-over technique

Switched after a senior mechanic at the hangar in Memphis showed me how to do it in 5 minutes flat, now I never go back to the old way, anyone else have a basic task that took way too long to unlearn?

My buddy Mike spent a whole year using a pipe wrench on his oil filter before a neighbor pointed out the strap wrench hanging on his own pegboard. He said he felt like a total idiot but at least he saves 15 minutes now.

Oh man, that's a classic case of having the right tool right in front of you and not seeing it. But wait, a strap wrench usually doesn't work great on oil filters unless you get a real tight grip, they can slip off sometimes. Still beats wrestling with a pipe wrench for a year though, that's dedication to the wrong method.
