Snapped a control cable on a Cessna 172 during pre-flight last Friday - 50 years experience and I still got fooled

210 hours in 172s and never once had a cable snap during pre-flight. But you know what gets me every time is that little rubber boot around the control column where the cable goes through the firewall. Mice love chewing on those in the winter. I found a nest in one last spring, had to pull the entire instrument panel just to get to the cable run.
