That 200-hour inspection on the old Dash 8 showed me what 15 years of neglect looks like
Pulled the cowling off a Dash 8 that came in from a small regional operator last Tuesday. The logbook said the last real deep clean was back in 2011. I've seen corrosion before but this was something else. Every drain hole was packed with dirt and grease, and the firewall had this crusty layer that took a whole can of cleaner just to see what was under it. The weird part was the engine itself ran fine, sounded fine on the test run. But you could tell the prior shops just did the minimum, oil changes and filter swaps, never pulled the panels to actually look. I spent 3 days just documenting all the spots where the oxidation had started to eat into the brackets. The owner asked why the quote was so high, and I showed him photos side by side, one bracket from 2009 that was smooth and one that crumbled when I touched it. He went quiet. Has anyone else come across a "runs great" plane that was secretly falling apart on the inside? How do you even convince an owner that hidden damage matters when the gauges all read normal?
