Torque wrench calibration story that flipped my thinking

Had a Cessna 172 come through last month in Dayton with a loose nose gear link, and I blamed the cotter pin installation at first. Turns out my old torque wrench was reading 20 ft-lbs high after a drop off the stand, so every fastener I'd set that week was actually under-torqued. I used to think annual calibration was a scam for the tool guys, but now I'm wondering who else has caught a bad wrench before it caused real trouble?

My uncle had a 1978 Ford F-250 that he bought new and NEVER changed the transmission fluid in, just topped it off for 40 years. When it finally started slipping, the shop pulled the pan and found what looked like metallic sludge, but the dang thing still shifted fine after they flushed it. He swears by that truck to this day, and it makes me wonder if we overthink maintenance on some things but totally ignore others. Your torque wrench story though, that's the kind of thing that keeps me up at night because I've dropped SO many tools off the stand and never thought twice. Now I'm gonna eyeball my clicker like it owes me money.
