Debate with a coworker about using wireless vs hardwired sensors in old houses

I was talking to Jim from the shop last Thursday and he swears by wireless for retrofits since you avoid all the crawlspace crawling. But I had a job in a 1920s house with thick plaster walls where the wireless kept failing at 40 feet range. Which way do you guys lean for older homes?

Plaster walls are the devil for wireless signals, reminds me of trying to get cell service in our school basement.

Read somewhere that older homes with wire mesh lath basically create a faraday cage for your wifi.
