Trusted a friend's shortcut on zone wiring, now I redo it every time

My buddy Rick who's been installing for 15 years told me I could skip the EOL resistor at the panel and just put it at the last device. Did that on a 3-story townhouse in Arlington last month, and every single zone showed a trouble on the keypad by morning. Turns out his trick only works with a specific panel brand, and my Vista panel needs it done proper. I spent a full Saturday pulling wire and re-terminating all 12 zones just to make it right. Has anyone else gotten burned by a shortcut that only works on certain hardware?

Man, I used to be all about shortcuts like that too, but after getting burned twice on different gear, I learned the hard way that "tricks" are basically panel-specific secrets. Now I just read the manual like a nerd, it saves me way more time than Rick's advice ever did lol.

Ugh, I feel that so hard. I wasted a whole weekend chasing some "pro tip" from a forum once, only to realize the guy was talking about a completely different model. Now I'm team manual too, boring as it sounds, at least it's reliable.
