Vent: Had a chat with a retired installer that shook me

Ran into an old timer named Pete at a supply house in Cleveland last Tuesday, he was picking up a keypad for a system from the 90s. He told me he's never needed more than a screwdriver and a meter to fix anything, and now I'm sitting here with a laptop full of programming software and a bag of adapters just to swap a sensor. You guys ever feel like the simpler gear had its own kind of elegance, or am I just overthinking this?

Ask him straight up if he thinks modern gear actually makes us less sharp, or is he just nostalgic for his old routine?

Nah, I gotta push back on "makes us less sharp." Modern gear forces you to think faster, not slower. For example, a rangefinder with slope compensation doesn't mean you stop reading the terrain, it means you can factor in a downhill lie in 5 seconds instead of guessing wrong from 150 yards. Same with GPS watches, you still have to pick the right club and commit to the swing, the tech just eliminates stupid math errors that cost strokes. The real test is how you process that data and execute under pressure, not whether you can pace off yardages like it's 1995. Nostalgia is fine but let's not pretend grinding with a yardage book made anyone a better ballstriker.
