Just did a head to head between D76 and Rodinal on the same roll of HP5

I cut a roll of HP5 in half and developed each piece different. D76 gave me nice smooth grain, pretty standard look. Rodinal was sharper but way grainier. Like sandpaper grain. For portraits I'd pick D76 every time. But for street photography that gritty Rodinal look just works. Depends what you want I guess. Anyone else done a side by side like that with the same film stock?

Did a side by side with Tri-X once and ended up with half a roll of beautiful portraits and half a roll that looked like I developed it in a garbage disposal. Rodinal just amplifies every little mistake I make with metering too. My shaky hands plus Rodinal equals grain so big you can count the individual crystals, which is a look I guess. D76 is like a safety net for people like me who still forget to check the temperature. Only pros should touch Rodinal, the rest of us just get sandpaper.

Ha! My buddy tried Rodinal once and said his negs looked like a car crash.
