One harsh critique about my scans made me reshoot everything

I was at a meetup in Portland last month and this older guy looked at my prints and said, 'your shadows are crushed because you're editing the scan, not the negative.' I thought I was being careful with my Pentax K1000 but he was right, I'd been dodging in Photoshop for months to fix stuff that should've been handled in exposure. After that I went back to basics, metered for the shadows and used a slower film, Portra 400 down to 200, and the difference is wild. Has anyone else had a stranger's feedback completely flip how they shoot?

Wait, did your friend ever get that fixed after a random dude at a flea market roasted his negs?
