That $120 bulk loader taught me a lesson about patience

Bought a used Watson loader off eBay last month to save cash on 35mm rolls. Figured loading 100 feet of HP5 would be easy. First try, film spooled sideways and ruined 20 frames of a job I shot for a local band in Austin. Second try, loader jammed and I lost another 15 frames. Finally took it apart, cleaned every gear with lighter fluid, and got one good roll. But by then I'd spent 3 hours and burned 35 frames of paid work. The cost of wasted film plus my time almost covered a fresh loader. Why does nobody warn you about the dark bag learning curve with these things? Anyone else have a bulk loader horror story or a trick to load these fast without mangling the spool?
