That old timer at the camera swap who saved my roll of Tri-X
I was at a camera swap meet in Pasadena last month, and this guy probably in his 70s saw me loading a roll of Tri-X into my Canon AE-1. He just walked up and said "you're pinching the leader too hard, you'll get scratches." I brushed it off at first because I'd been shooting film for like 2 years. But he showed me his trick of using a tiny piece of tape on the leader before loading it, and I tried it on my next roll. The negatives came out totally clean, no marks at all. Anyone else get tips from random strangers at swaps that actually changed how you shoot?

Or maybe the scratches are just part of the film look you're paying for.

Wish that old timer was at my first swap meet where I scratched my whole first roll.
