Burned a roll of Portra 400 because I forgot the lens cap, now I use a rubber band

Last month I was shooting downtown Austin and wasted an entire roll before realizing the cap was still on, felt like a total rookie. Took a rubber band and wrapped it around the cap so it hangs loose when I take it off, now I can tell at a glance if it's still on. Has anyone else got a dumb simple fix for the brain farts?

Wait, doesnt the rubber band get in the way when you're trying to shoot fast, or is it more about the habit of feeling it dangle? You'd think a quick glance at the viewfinder would be enough, but clearly not for us.
