I tried that whole "shoot at box speed" thing everyone swears by and it ruined my roll of Tri-X
Everyone online says you gotta shoot Tri-X at 400 and develop normally. Well I did that last weekend at Golden Gate Park and got a bunch of flat, boring negatives. My best shots have always been when I push it to 800 or 1600. Has anyone else had this happen or am I just messing up my development?

My first roll of Tri-X I shot at box speed came out so flat it looked like I accidentally developed a roll of Ilford Delta 100 by mistake. I feel your pain on those boring negatives from Golden Gate Park, especially since the light there can be weird with all that fog. For me, pushing to 800 gives it that punchy contrast that makes me feel like a real photographer instead of someone who just wasted 36 frames. Have you tried using a different developer when you shoot at 400, or do you just stick with whatever you normally use for pushing?

The last time I shot Tri-X at box speed was in Seattle and my negatives came out so thin I could read a newspaper through them. Now I just pretend the box says 800 and move on with my life.
