My first roll of slide film was a total flop, then a stranger's tip saved it

I bought a bulk roll of Ektachrome at a camera swap in Portland for $12 and shot it at 400 without changing the ISO on my AE-1, so everything came out a muddy green mess. I was about to toss the negatives until a guy at the local lab said to try shooting it at 80 and underexposing by a stop instead, and honestly the next roll had colors that popped like I'd never seen. Has anyone else found that certain expired film stocks need way more compensation than the box says, or did I just get a weird batch?

Man, expired Ektachrome is a total wild card, gotta test each batch.
