My lab guy talked me into trying a zone system cheat and I was dead wrong about it

He said just meter for the shadows and develop for the highlights is actually fine for most scenes, you don't need to be a purist about it. Shot a roll of HP5 at my sister's wedding last weekend following his advice and the negatives actually came out usable, has anyone else found shortcuts that work better than the textbook method?
