That old guy at the thrift store changed how I meter my shots

I was at Goodwill last Saturday looking for a cheap lamp, and this older dude saw me fussing with my Pentax K1000. He asked if I was shooting sunny f/16, and I said yeah usually... He laughed and told me he blew 3 rolls on a trip to Yosemite because he trusted that rule in the shade. I was skeptical at first, but he showed me his light meter app on his phone and we did a test. Now I spot meter off the shadows instead of the highlights and my exposures came out way more consistent.

Yeah, that's how most good advice works. You learn it, then unlearn it.

Yeah, took me three years to realize I was following advice that just made my anxiety worse.

Read something somewhere that said good advice is just someone else's coping mechanism that worked for them. Hard to know what actually fits you until you've tried it yourself.
