The guy at the camera swap meet told me my photos were 'too sharp'

He said I was over-focusing on modern digital sharpness and killing the soul of my shots. Now I shoot a Canon AE-1 with a 50mm f1.4 that's got a bit of haze in it and my portraits finally have that dreamy look I was chasing. Anyone else get weird critiques that actually helped?

Oh man, that swap meet guy was totally right, I got told my black and whites looked too clinical once and it was the best advice ever.

Wow, that really hits home. I had a similar wake-up call a while back when a friend pointed out my edits looked like a medical textbook. It stung at first, but it changed everything about how I shoot. Overly clean photos can feel so sterile and boring, like they have no soul or mood to them. A little grain or a blown out highlight can make a shot feel alive and real. Getting knocked down like that is honestly the best thing for your growth as a photographer, right?
