Update: started metering for the shadows on my Canon AE-1 in Seattle and my night shots finally stopped looking like mud
I was shooting Portra 400 around Capitol Hill after dark and every frame came back gray and flat because I kept letting the meter read the bright neon signs. Then a guy at Glazer's told me to just meter the darkest part of the scene, and now my blacks are actually black instead of washed out soup. Do you spot meter the shadows too, or do you just bracket and hope one lands?
Spot metering shadows works but is it really that serious for casual night shots? Bracket and hope sounds fine to me, though your mileage may vary depending on the look you want.
