A park ranger in Springfield made me rethink my coin digging process

I used to dig first and ask questions later, figured any hole was worth the risk. Last month at a small city park in Springfield, a ranger walked over and told me I was leaving visible scars in the turf. He showed me a grass plug technique where you cut a flap, flip it back, and press it down clean. I tried it on my next three finds, a 1943 wheat penny, a war nickel, and some crusty token, and you could barely tell I was there. That ranger also mentioned a $200 fine for unplugged holes, which got my attention fast. Now I carry a small knife and a plastic sheet for the dirt, and it takes maybe two extra minutes per target.
