Flea market dude swore a 1909 VDB penny was fake and I almost walked away

Found this crusty penny at a flea market in Omaha last Saturday for 50 cents. Guy running the table said it was a common replica and laughed when I asked. Snagged it anyway because I liked the crust, cleaned it up at home with some olive oil and a toothpick. Turned out it was a real 1909 S VDB, worth probably $800 after grading. Has anyone else had a seller talk them out of a good score?

Man, that's a heck of a story and honestly the seller's loss is your gain. I remember reading somewhere that even the pros get fooled by crusty coins sometimes, so that flea market guy probably just couldn't be bothered to look close. A clean 1909 S VDB for fifty cents is the kind of find people daydream about, so congrats on trusting your gut.

Wait, you're telling me you snagged a 1909 S VDB for fifty cents? That's insane, lol. I've been hunting for years and the closest I've gotten was a beat up 1910 that turned out to be a counterfeit. The fact that flea market guy laughed while practically handing you a grand is wild. Good call on the olive oil and toothpick too, that's always my go to for a gentle clean. Legit jealous over here.
