I finally dug up a coin that wasn't just a modern penny at the old Miller farm

I was swinging my detector near the foundation of the old Miller farm last weekend and pulled a 1919 wheat cent from about six inches down. The soil was really rocky and it took me three tries to get a solid signal. Has anyone else had better luck digging near old farmhouse foundations than other spots?

Did you try gridding the area around the foundation in like five foot sections? I had a similar experience at an old barn site last fall where the ground was just as nasty with rocks and roots. What finally worked for me was switching to a smaller coil and slowing way down, almost dragging it through the dirt. Ended up pulling a 1914-D wheat cent and a couple of old buttons from a spot I'd walked right over twice before. Just something to try if you go back out there.

That rocky soil near old foundations always seems to hide the best finds, doesn't it?
