I was about to throw out my dug coins until a guy at the Springfield flea market said one word to me
I kept finding these green crusty discs at an old church lot in Springfield and figured they were junk slugs, so I had a whole coffee can of them headed for the trash. Then a vendor named Ray glanced in the can, pulled one out, and asked if I'd looked at the edge under light because the crust was hiding silver. Turns out 5 of them were 90 percent silver dimes from the 1940s, so now I clean nothing until someone who knows looks first. What's the dumbest thing you almost tossed before someone stopped you?
Ray got lucky with those 5 dimes but for every story like yours there's 20 guys who scrubbed a coin with baking soda and turned a $200 coin into a $20 coin. Cleaning is only bad when you do it wrong, and honestly a lot of crusty junk really is junk, so sitting on a coffee can of green slugs waiting for an expert just means you hoard garbage for years. My uncle sat on a bucket of "maybe good" coins for a decade and 95 percent of it was rusted washer scrap.
