Showerthought: Found a 1914 German coin in a park in Ohio and it's wild to think that kid probably never imagined his pocket change would end up under a swing set 110 years later

I was sifting through my finds from Sunday and realized that coin was minted right before WWI started, and whoever dropped it had no clue their whole world was about to flip upside down has anyone else ever held a coin and just stopped to think about the person who last touched it?

Soak that thing in some distilled water for a day or two, then hit it with a soft toothbrush. I've found a few old coins myself and the crud that comes off is insane. @ruby_lane is right about the time capsule thing, I pulled a 1943 penny from under a bush last summer and it looked like it had been through a war itself. The patina tells more of a story than the coin's face value ever could. Just don't scrub too hard or you'll lose the detail.

It's crazy how one little metal disc can tie you to a moment in time like that. I've definitely done that with old coins and even with stuff like old keys or bottles I've dug up in the yard. It's part of a bigger pattern I notice all the time - how we're all just passing through, leaving little pieces of our daily lives behind without even knowing it. That kid probably just bought a pickle or a piece of candy with that coin, never thinking about where it'd end up a century later. Makes you wonder what random stuff you've dropped today that someone might find in 2134 and have the same feeling about. It's like the ground is just a big time capsule we're all constantly adding to without meaning to.
