The old guy at the Rose Bowl flea market handed me a Mercury dime and said check the weight
Last month I was digging through a $5 bin at the Rose Bowl flea market in Pasadena and this older guy next to me kept watching me sort through wheat pennies. After a while he pulled a 1941 Mercury dime out of his own pocket and dropped it in my palm and said "weigh that one, it feels light to me." I didn't have a scale on me so I just said thanks and figured he was being weird. When I got home I put it on my kitchen scale and it came in at 2.3 grams instead of the normal 2.5, and a quick search showed it was a known counterfeit from back in the day. That dime is now sitting in a flip on my desk and I keep thinking about how this random stranger spotted it in two seconds flat just by the feel of it. I went back the next month looking for him to say thanks but never saw him again. Has anyone else run into a trick coin like that, and do you keep them or toss them?
