Back in my old Chicago walk-up, I just had a bucket under the sink.
It was a mess, always smelled, and I had to run it down to the community garden every week. About three years ago I switched to a worm bin, a simple Rubbermaid setup I drilled holes in. The worms handle everything now, no smell, and I only have to deal with the castings every few months. Anyone else make the jump from a basic scrap bucket to a proper vermicompost system?

Tbh, same. My old bucket was a fruit fly motel and the smell got so bad I had to keep it on the fire escape. Switched to a homemade bin with shredded newspaper and red wigglers, and it's crazy how clean it is. I just feed them my coffee grounds and they do all the work.

Honestly, my old bucket was so bad I think the fruit flies had a union. Making the switch to worms felt like going from a busted flip phone to a smartphone. The difference in smell alone was worth the small effort of setting up the bin. It just feels good to not be running a science experiment under the sink anymore.

Yeah, the old bucket method is rough. I made the same switch to a worm bin and it's a total game changer. So much easier.
