Can we talk about how bokashi bins smell way less than I thought?

I had this neighbor last week who's been composting in her studio for like 3 years, and she told me she uses a bokashi bin instead of a regular worm setup. I've always avoided it because I assumed it would stink up the whole place, but she let me open hers and it barely smelled like anything, just kind of pickly. It hit different because she said the key is layering with enough bran and draining the liquid every few days, which is way easier than dealing with fruit flies in a countertop bin. Has anyone else switched to bokashi and actually liked it better for a small space?

Plus you can actually compost meat and dairy with it.

Yeah, the pickly smell is real. I mean, I was bracing for something awful, but it mostly just smelled like a really sad jar of pickles I forgot about in the back of the fridge. My biggest concern was that my apartment would end up smelling like a garbage truck, but the bran really does kill most of the scent.
