Don't trust those fancy countertop composters, learned the hard way

I dropped $300 on one of those electric countertop composters that claims to turn scraps into fertilizer in hours. After 6 months of using it, I found out it's basically just a fancy dehydrator that shrinks the volume but doesn't actually break down the material. I took it to a local community garden and they told me it was just dried scraps, not compost. Had to toss the whole batch and start over with a normal bin system. Anyone else get tricked by these expensive machines?

Gonna have to disagree a bit here, I've got a Lomi and it's been working great for me. Yeah, it doesn't make real compost like a bin does, but it shrinks my scraps down to almost nothing and I mix that dried stuff into my garden soil. Been doing it for a year now and my plants are loving it, no problems at all. Maybe the community garden folks were just being strict about their definition of compost, but for a regular person at home it does the job. Different tools for different needs, I guess.

Fancy dehydrator" is exactly right. I feel for you.
