Got shut down by my building manager for my bokashi bin last week
I've been using a bokashi bin under my sink for about 6 months now and it worked great. No smell, no bugs, just some weird fermented pickle type smell when I opened it. But last Tuesday my building manager came by for a fire alarm check and spotted it. She said it was against policy to have any kind of composting system indoors because of potential pest issues. I tried to explain that bokashi is anaerobic and sealed but she didn't care. Now I'm stuck with a bucket of fermented food scraps and no idea what to do with it. Has anyone else run into apartment rules blocking their compost setup? How did you get around it?

The community garden idea is solid, that's what I ended up doing too. Found a small one a few blocks away and they were thrilled to have more organic material. Just called the number on their sign and asked if they wanted fermented scraps, they said yes without even hesitating. Maybe check if there's a local Buy Nothing group on Facebook too, people with chickens or worm bins go crazy for bokashi pre-compost. Sucks that building managers don't get how different it is from a regular compost pile though.

Oh man, that sucks. I mean, I've been there basically word for word. My old building manager was the same way, wouldn't even listen to me explain how the bucket works. I ended up just hiding mine in a cabinet with a towel over it when I knew she was coming by, but that's not a great long term solution. What finally worked for me was finding a local community garden that was totally fine with me dropping off my fermented scraps for their compost pile. Maybe check with a nearby garden or even a neighbor with a yard who gardens, most people are happy to take it off your hands.
