I used to wash every eggshell and banana peel under the tap because I figured cleaner scraps break down faster, and my bin kept getting this slimy smell no matter what I did. Last month a neighbor in my building's compost group chat in Minneapolis asked why my bin smelled and I told her about the rinsing, and she said "you're adding water to a sealed bucket." Turns out the extra water was the whole problem, not the food. Now I just crush the shells dry and toss them in, and the smell is gone after 3 weeks. Has anyone else been making their bin wetter without realizing it?
