I was totally wrong about bokashi composting smelling like garbage
For like 6 months I avoided trying bokashi composting in my tiny studio in Chicago because I was convinced it would make my whole apartment stink. I kept seeing people rave about it online but I just couldn't get past the idea of fermenting food scraps in a bucket under my sink. Then my neighbor gave me her old starter kit when she moved out and I figured I had nothing to lose. I was shocked honestly - the stuff just smells like pickles or sourdough starter not like rotting trash at all. I keep my bucket right next to my kitchen counter and I barely notice it even on hot summer days. The real game changer for me was finding out you can put citrus and onion scraps in there which my worm bin definitely can't handle. Has anyone else been surprised by how non-stinky bokashi actually is or do I just have a weird tolerance for pickle smells?

That pickle/sourdough comparison is spot on, but doesn't the sweet smell get overwhelming when you finally bury the fermented scraps in soil?
