Just crunched the numbers on my worm bin after 6 months
I finally weighed my finished compost from my little under-sink worm bin and it came out to 14 pounds from about 3 months of scraps. Found out from a university extension PDF that apartment compost like this actually keeps 60% of food waste out of landfills if done right. Has anyone else measured their output and been surprised at how much you actually save from the trash?

60% just sounds like a number some extension office threw around to make people feel good. My bin went through a whole phase where it just smelled like rotting coffee grounds and took forever to break down. It's not like every half-eaten apple core instantly turns into black gold, you know. Plus people love to forget about the energy and water it takes to maintain these things, not to mention the trips to buy new bedding or fix a fruit fly problem. I'd take that 60% stat with a grain of salt until someone runs a real study on actual apartment setups, not just theoretical perfect conditions. Your mileage may vary big time depending on what you're feeding it and how often you actually turn the pile.
