My balcony worm bin in Seattle finally clicked after a month of mess

I tried a small plastic bin with holes last month and it got way too wet, like a swamp. My friend in Ballard told me to add a whole newspaper shredded up for browns, not just a little. After a week of mixing that in, the smell went away and the worms got busy. Anyone else have a good browns source for a tiny setup?

Oh man, my first try was a total swamp bin too. I felt so bad for the worms, I almost apologized to them. I use my junk mail now, just tear up all those paper ads. It works shockingly well once you get the mix right.

Shredded cardboard egg cartons work great for that.

My buddy in Tacoma had the same problem and he started grabbing those brown paper lunch bags from his kid's school lunches. He just tears them up rough and tosses them in, says it keeps things fluffed up perfectly.
