My bokashi bin turned into a science experiment from hell
Got a bokashi bucket 2 months ago. Loved the idea. No smell, no flies. But I followed all the instructions. Started getting this thick white mold on top after week 3. Then the liquid drain smelled like a dead animal. I dumped the whole thing in my building's compost bin yesterday. Never again. Has anyone had success with bokashi without it going rancid?

Haven't you noticed that a lot of these "worse case" stories end up being about people who just didn't follow the basic instructions? I mean, the white mold is actually supposed to happen. That's a good sign. The bad smell comes from not pressing the food down or not draining the liquid often enough. It's like saying a sourdough starter is gross because you left it out without feeding it for two weeks. The science experiment part is usually user error.

Oh man, I feel your pain! Mine got gross too until I started pressing the food down way harder and draining the liquid every 2 days instead of waiting a week. The trick for me was adding a fresh layer of bokashi bran on top after each drain, and it stopped smelling bad after that.
