My countertop bin turned into a science experiment after 4 days
Left my scraps in that sealed plastic bin too long last Tuesday. Opened it up and the smell hit me like a wall in my 400 sq ft studio. Now I freeze scraps in an old yogurt container and dump them every 3 days. Anyone else deal with fruit flies after a bin fails, or is that just Boston humidity?

Man, I gotta push back on this! Freezing scraps is totally overkill. You're basically treating your trash like it's a gourmet meal. That sealed bin thing, yeah that's on you for not poking some holes in the lid. But the real move is just letting the bin breathe, not putting it in the freezer. I've left scraps out for a week in my place and it's fine, just dump it when it starts to look sad. Fruit flies are just part of city living, you get them no matter what you do, so why go through all that extra effort? You're just adding steps to a simple chore. Do what you want, but I'll take my chances with the counter bin and maybe a quick rinse every couple days.
