My countertop compost bin finally stopped smelling thanks to a simple fix

I kept getting fruit flies and a weird sour smell from my kitchen compost even though I was layering browns. Then my neighbor in unit 4B told me to freeze my scraps before putting them in the bin instead of dumping them straight in. I tried it with a batch of banana peels and apple cores last week and it actually worked. Has anyone else had luck freezing scraps or do you have another trick for small apartment composting?

4B knows what's up. I started doing that last spring. The freeze trick stops mold before it even starts. I keep a bag in the freezer and just dump it in the bin when it's full. Also started grinding eggshells into powder and mixing that in, keeps the bin from getting slimy.

Gotta say I'm a little skeptical here, @elizabeth_gonzalez. Like how bad is your compost bin really getting that you need to freeze stuff and grind eggshells into powder? I just toss my scraps in a lidded bucket on the counter and dump it every couple days, never had mold or slime issues unless I left it for a week. Maybe I just don't produce enough food scraps to make it that nasty.
