My mini compost bin exploded on a Tuesday afternoon
Last week I opened my countertop compost bin and fruit flies swarmed my whole kitchen. Turns out I had too much wet food waste and not enough browns like paper or cardboard. I had to toss the whole batch and start over from scratch. Anyone else had a bin go bad on them? How do you balance moisture in a small apartment setup?

Bought one of those compact bins for my counter and learned the hard way that coffee grounds need company. Had to dump the whole sticky mess because it turned into a science experiment I did not sign up for. Now I save every junk mail envelope and shred it into the bin every few days. Also started freezing my food scraps before adding them, which kills the fruit fly eggs before they hatch.

man i feel your pain @terrymitchell. i did the exact same thing with my counter bin and ended up with a moldy science project that smelled worse than my garbage can. the junk mail shredding trick is smart, i gotta start doing that.
