My neighbor moved out and left me their worm bin

Last month a lady on the third floor knocked on my door holding a plastic tub full of red wigglers. She said she was moving to a place with a yard and didn't want to take them. I had never done worm composting before but I said yes. Three weeks in and my kitchen scraps are disappearing faster than my trash can ever handled. Has anyone else gotten handed a bin from a stranger?

...and honestly I'm kind of wondering why everyone acts like getting handed a worm bin is some huge life changing event. I mean yeah cool, free worms. But it's still just composting. People have been throwing their banana peels in dirt forever. The bees thing sounds way more interesting than worms honestly. At least with bees you get honey and a story about getting stung through your jeans. With worms you just get... dirt? Which you could also get by just having a regular compost pile outside. I'm not saying it's bad, but the dramatic tone in the original post makes it sound like someone handed you a winning lottery ticket. It's just worms.

Oh man, my experience was with a beehive. Same deal. Guy down the street moved to Arizona and just left a full langstroth hive in his backyard. Said I could have it if I dealt with it. I knew zero about bees but figured free honey. First time I suited up and opened it I got stung four times through my jeans. Still have the hive four years later though. Those worms are probably the better deal honestly. Less screaming involved.
