My neighbor said banana peels are fine in the bin, now my apartment smells like a distillery

Turns out tossing whole peels in there without chopping them up makes them ferment instead of break down, and I learned that after 3 weeks of gagging every time I opened the lid. Anyone else have a quick fix for when your bin turns into a science experiment gone wrong?

Used to toss them in whole too. Definitely had that lesson roasted into my nose now.

Oh man, I feel this one in my soul. I did the same thing with a whole watermelon rind once. My bin started bubbling and I actually jumped back when I opened it. For a quick fix, empty the whole thing into a trash bag and tie it off tight, then bleach the bin with hot water and let it air dry for a few hours. I also learned the hard way that coffee grounds plus banana equals a smell that makes you question every life choice you've ever made.
