PSA: My old bucket method was a moldy nightmare compared to this worm bin I set up 2 months ago

I used to just toss scraps in a 5 gallon bucket with some dirt and hope for the best... ended up with this slimy, smelly mess every time. Switched to a simple worm bin from a kit I found at a hardware store in Denver. The worms actually eat everything now, no smells, and I got my first batch of castings last week. Has anyone else had that gross bucket phase before switching to something better?

Go ahead and defend your slime bucket but honestly my bin has been sitting in my garage for three months and I keep finding fruit flies and gnats no matter what I do. Worms escape through the holes I drilled. I had to add way more bedding than the kit said and now it weighs a ton. My old bucket method with a tight lid gave me zero bugs and I could just dump the whole thing in my garden when it was done. Not saying worms are bad but your kit probably cost like 60 bucks and my bucket was free. I still don't get the hype when I could just bury scraps straight in the ground and let nature handle it lol.

My bucket phase looked like a science experiment gone horribly wrong.
