Spent $80 on that countertop compost bin and it was a total waste

I got one of those fancy stainless steel countertop bins with a charcoal filter about 3 months ago. Looked nice, but the smell still leaked out after a week because the filter doesn't work as good as they say. Plus the bin was too small for my kitchen scraps, I was emptying it every 2 days. Now I just use a old plastic container I keep in my freezer. It cost me zero dollars and it doesn't smell at all. Has anyone else had better luck with those pricey bins or am I just doing something wrong?

Oh man, that stainless steel bin thing reminds me of when I tried one of those fancy water filter pitchers with the built-in timer. Looked great on the counter, but the filter light started blinking after like two weeks and I couldn't figure out how to reset it. Ended up just using an old milk jug from the recycling bin instead. Your mileage may vary, but in my experience the simple stuff usually does the job better than the pricey gadgets. That freezer trick you mentioned honestly sounds like a solid hack, I've seen people do that with coffee grounds too and say it cuts down on fruit flies big time.
