Vent: Bought a $60 countertop composter that just made sloppy sludge

I got suckered into one of those electric countertop composters from a big box store. Paid $62 for it at Home Depot in Austin and after 3 weeks it just made a wet, smelly mess that attracted fruit flies. My tiny apartment kitchen can't handle that stench. Has anyone else had better luck with bokashi bins or is that more trouble than it's worth?

Three weeks and it attracted fruit flies? That sounds absolutely brutal, I would have tossed that thing out the window on day two. For sixty bucks you basically bought a warm, wet fly hotel. I tried bokashi bins for a few months last year and they worked way better than I expected, the fermentation smell is more like pickles than rot and you can keep the bucket under the sink. The main hassle is you have to remember to drain the liquid every couple days and bury the finished stuff if you don't have outdoor space. Did you manage to get your money back from Home Depot or are you just stuck with a stinky paperweight now?

Is it really that serious though? Sounds like a minor annoyance more than a full-blown crisis, @evannelson. Just toss it in the trash and move on with your life.
