Got called out to a house last week where the fridge was 20 years old and still running perfect
The owner said he'd never once called a repairman for it, just cleaned the coils every 6 months like clockwork. Makes me wonder if we're overcomplicating things with all these fancy diagnostic boards when some of these old simple machines just need basic care. Any of you guys still see those late 90s models that just won't quit?

20 years and never once called a repairman? That's absolutely mental. I've got guys in my neighborhood who replace their fridges every 5 years just because the ice maker jams. Cleaning the coils every 6 months makes a huge difference but nobody does it. Those late 90s models were built like tanks with simple mechanical parts that didn't need a computer to decide when to cool. Meanwhile, I'm staring at a $600 board replacement on a 3 year old Samsung and wondering why we can't just have a basic compressor and thermostat anymore.

Stop buying Samsung appliances. Everyone knows this. They make good phones and TVs. That's it. Their fridges and washing machines are designed to fail after the warranty runs out. My sister fought with her Samsung ice maker for two years. Ice bridge forming constantly. She finally tossed it and got a basic Whirlpool. No computer screen on the door. No WiFi. Just cold. Works perfectly.
