I finally stopped being snobby about used parts after a fridge job in Oakdale last Thursday
I usually only use brand new compressors but this old Whirlpool was from 2005 and the customer couldn't afford a full swap. The local parts guy talked me into a tested used one for $80 saying he's been doing this 30 years. I put it in and it kicked on perfect, worked like new. Has anyone else had good luck with used compressors or am I asking for trouble down the road?

Man, hard disagree from me. Used compressors are a gamble every time. You got lucky this one time but that doesn't mean it's smart. I've seen too many of those "tested" units crap out in six months and then you're back doing the same job for free.

Picked up a used Quincy from a shop going out of business three years ago and it's still running like a tank. But you're not wrong about the gamble part. You gotta check the hours, pull the drain valve, and listen for knocking before you hand over cash. If the seller won't let you run it under load for ten minutes, walk away. That test takes almost no time and saves you from doing the job again for free.
