My buddy's take on compressor swaps caught me off guard

I was talking to this guy named Mike at a parts counter in Phoenix last week. He said swapping a compressor on a 10 year old fridge is usually a waste because the efficiency drops so much after that age. I always thought fixing it was the right call for the customer... but he had a point about the power bill adding up over a few years. Has anyone else run into customers complaining about higher electric costs after a compressor swap?

Man that's a good point and it honestly made me rethink my whole approach. I used to always say fix it because I figured a working fridge was better than a dead one, but now I wonder how many people I accidentally costed money in the long run. My own neighbor got a compressor swap on an old GE and his summer bills shot up like 40 bucks a month for two years before the thing finally gave out. Looking back I should have just steered him toward a new energy star model instead.

Honestly, I've had a few customers notice their bills go up after a swap and it made me rethink giving the green light every time. Ngl, Mike's got a solid point about efficiency dropping off after a decade or so.
